An Introduction to Horse Riding

I did a show in the beginning of the decade where I learned bareback
horse-riding. Before that time my most active involvement with horses had
been at hokey wilderness trails and occasional discussions with avid
equestrians I’d randomly meet near my home town in southwestern Ohio. I
had seen horses on screen all my life, of course, but being that I grew up in
a mid-size city (even though it was surrounded by farmland on all four sides,)

I’d never really had a lot of experience with horse-riding directly.
The show was called Blue Jacket. It was set on a three and a half acre stage
near an old Shawnee Indian settlement, and the show dealt at least
tangentially with the unique relationship between people and horses. In the
time soon after the Spanish introduced horses into the Americas and until
the beginning of the 20th century, horse-riding was one of the most common mode of transportation for medium-length distance traveling in the country.

In the time period during which the show was set– just before the
Revolutionary war– the relationship was much, much more intimate, much
like that of the relationship between humans and their old family dogs. The
Shawnee did all of their horse-riding on bareback and, as such, during the
show I had to learn to do so. It was an interesting though rather sweaty
experience that I recommend to anyone who’s ever wanted to feel the
connection a person and a horse can really have.

Horse riding has its drawbacks, of course. The horse is a living, breathing
animal and, as such, needs to be treated with care. It’s not at all like driving a car because, of course, horse riding involves dealing with an animal that
needs to be fed, rested, and cared for. Remember that riding a horse isn’t
only a fun way to get around anymore since the advent of cars and airplanes.

For most riders, horse riding is a passion.
