For the equestrian rider, or just leisure time horse owner, horse riding boots for purpose and fashion are an important part of owning a horse. Just about every culture and society came to the conclusion long ago that boots were a necessary thing when it came to riding these animals. They indeed serve a purpose, though many non-horse riding folks might not realize this is so. When you think about how a person’s legs have to straddle the horse’s back and its sides, you can more easily appreciate the need for appropriate riding apparel.
Horse riding boots come in a universe of styles and purposeful functionality. There are also different kinds of boots for different types of horse riding. A thoroughbred horse’s jockey needs a select pair of specialty boots, whereas a bronco busting rodeo cowboy doesn’t require the same sort of rig. Finding the right riding boot to serve your specific needs should be a high priority of yours when it comes to outfitting yourself for riding.
For the serious equestrian (”show rider”), the boots needed depend on the kind of special riding that’s going to be done. Will the rider be engaging in what’s called “dressage?” Or maybe there’s just a more casual show-off atmosphere to the event? The style and material of the boot will depend upon the answer.
In the sport of endurance riding, the boot doesn’t usually look like the nearly knee-high model we’re all used to seeing. In fact, it more closely resembles the low-calf or high-ankle boot we might see on a hiker or other sportsman, though its purpose is always intended to support the horse rider in the event he or she is engaging in.
There are also different varieties of horse riding boots designed for various climates and times of the year. You wouldn’t normally wear a thinner summer boot when out on a hunting or jumping event in the dead of winter and vice-versa. These boots tend to have slightly thicker soles and either Velcro or gusseted closure points. You don’t normally see such straps or items in a summer equestrian boot, either, which is usually just pulled on.
Horse riding boots have evolved over time, though their evolution has kept certain elements of their construction largely the same over the decades and centuries. There are differences, though, in the boot when it comes to the kinds of stirrups the rider will be using. Are they shorter – for shows, jumping or fox hunting – or are they longer? Are they a paddock boot – which is usually only ankle high – or are they higher on the outside of the leg, to prevent the knee from being injured in fall or slip? The answers will determine the boot, it seems.
The color of horse riding boots is also a factor to be considered, as each event or activity traditionally has a specific color type which the boot will be made in. Black boots are usually seen in fox hunting or event riding. Show jumping normally calls for a brownish or black boot, also.
With so many events or horse riding activities, it’s only natural that different styles of boots would evolve to accommodate individual needs and purposes. Take a bit of time to learn about the kind of horse riding you’re doing and what the style of boot it is that you should be wearing.
