Horse Riding Games For Competition, And For Fun
The most obvious game that springs to mind when thinking about horse riding games, or games that are played on horseback, is Polo. Although it has links with the aristocracy and upper class folk, there are also ordinary people who play. The only criteria is having access to a horse and being a member of a Polo club. It’s quite a serious game, and there are leagues across the country where teams play competitively against each other for titles and /or trophies. Polo has actually been around a long, long time, with first reports dating from 600BC when the Turcomans and the Persians battled it out.
There are some for “fun” games that don’t have the “gravitas” associated with Polo as an acknowledged sport These are unofficial games played from horseback that bring some lightness into honing one’s horse riding skills. One such game is The Cup and Bucket game. The idea is to put a number of cups (plastic cups are ideal) on a rail or fence. The riders must be able to reach them while still mounted. A number of buckets (1 per rider) are positioned on the ground, and the riders have to ride out, collect 1 cup, and drop it in their bucket. If they drop a cup in one of the other riders bucket, it counts to that other rider. The one with the most cups in their bucket is the eventual winner.
The egg and spoon race is another fun game. I guess everybody will know this one, I think we all played it as children, and it’s the same thing, but on horseback. It takes quite a good level of skill to balance an egg on a spoon from horseback, particularly if you’re cantering or galloping to try and win. Great fun!!
There’s another great “fun” game called “Paper pairs”. This really is about being able to control your horse. It’s quite educational from an equestrian point of view. It is simply played by pairs of riders. They have to hold a paper (say a newspaper page) between the two of them and then complete the course with the paper still intact and still held between them at the finish line. The faster you try and go, the more difficult it becomes. Very frustrating!!

I personally love playing games on horseback, and my horse really enjoys it too. I’m very pleased with this as it is an addition to the games we can play.
