Most of these games provide a large thrill and does not lack in any risk either. One needs to keep the safety factor in mind before engaging in any of these horseback games.
Most of these games are enjoyed on the horse’s back and are played as individuals, paired or team events. Some games can be enjoyed by adults and children. One popular game for children are the Egg and Spoon Race. In this game the child rides on a pony, equipped with a spoon and an egg. While riding the horse he needs to balance the egg on the spoon which is held in his mouth until he reaches the finish line. Along with the joy riding on the horse, the child also learns concentration and balancing skills.
Another horse riding game is the Pairs race which, as the name suggests, is played in pairs. In this game, one person mounts a horse or a pony and reaches the finish line, where his/her partner is waiting. The partner has to alight from the horse or pony and help their partner get on to its back. This game is similar to the relay event in athletics.
Barrel racing is another popular horse-riding sport in which both men and women can compete. This is an individual event where the person riding the horse has to complete a particular pattern. This pattern is formed by arranging barrels. The person who completes the entire formation in the least amount of time without overturning any barrel is adjudged the winner. This game is a test of how much control the rider can exert on the horse.
Another game that tests the control of the rider is the pole bending event. In this event, the individual has to manoeuvre carefully around six poles which are arranged in a straight line.
Another famous horse-riding game is steer wrestling. This is a bizarre version of bull fighting. In steer wrestling, the rider mounts the horse and chases the steer (a bull with long and sharp horns). On catching up with the steer, the rider has to jump off from the horse and wrestles with the steer by holding on to its horns. This event is highly risky since there are high chances of injury to the rider. Also, the animal rights community has raised its voice against the cruelty meted out to animals in this event.
Polo is another very popular all time favourite team sport. There are four players on each team and their horses. The players score points by sending a small white plastic or wooden ball into the opposition team’s goalpost. They us a long stick, which is called a mallet, to strike the ball. This game can be played anywhere and in all seasons. It can be played during summer in the ground or during winter on a frozen lake or ground filled with snow. No wonder then, that this sport is enjoyed by all professional horse-riders.
