Learn to Ride a Horse – Some Tips to Help You

May 12, 2009 · Posted in horse riding ·by Connie · Comment

There are three rules that I believe should be followed whenever someone decides to learn to ride a horse:

1. Get a good instructor.
2. Get an older, experienced horse, preferably a schoolmaster, which is a very well-educated horse.
3. Start with horse handling skills from the ground.

Having a good instructor is vital to help a new rider gain confidence and knowledge at a pace that you can take on. There are different levels of instructor, and also different disciplines, so getting the right one is key to learning how to ride successfully.

Bucking at the Canter

May 10, 2009 · Posted in horse riding ·by Connie · 1 Comment

AQHA Professional Horseman Patrick Hooks of Texhoma, Oklahoma, offers advice to a reader whose horse bucks at the canter.

Question:

I have an 11-year-old palomino Quarter Horse whom I have owned for a year and a half. While we are cantering, my horse bucks. I have had his saddle fit checked, and I have had a chiropractor work on him, yet he still bucks several times in the canter. I’m not sure how to break what seems to be becoming a bad habit.

When I first bought him, he was not bucking, but he seems to have developed this bad habit over the past six months. While I have a pretty good seat, I am concerned that I will get hurt if this behavior continues or, worse yet, someone else may get hurt.

I would appreciate any suggestions you can make. I don’t think he’s in pain as I have had the vet check him. Help!

Marla Schneider

Answer:

Any time I help with a problem, whether I’m present or not, I think about four separate categories: mental, physical, emotional and mechanical. Each category is self explanatory, except for mechanical. That’s what I think of as the rider’s duty of horsemanship, including being aware of the horse’s foot fall and movements. In this case, here’s how I went through the checklist:

The ethical issue of horses being sold for slaughter

May 9, 2009 · Posted in horses for sale ·by Connie · Comment

I’ve owned horses for years. I’ve met “kill buyers”, bought from auctions, regularly visit the low end (meat) auction in my area, and do rehab work for neglected horses. I have seen much of this firsthand, and I’m in the trenches working to give at least some of these horses a second chance. The myth that horses going to slaughter are all old, sick, unsound, and useless is FALSE.

The vast majority are neither old nor useless.

The argument for banning commercial slaughter in the US is not about what a dead carcass is used for. It’s not against people eating meat. And it has nothing to do with a farmer putting a horse out of his misery.
