Designing a horse barn is very similar to designing a house. Even though the barn is intended for horses it needs to be comfortable and well built. Location is the key to a good horse barn; therefore, choose your spot carefully because you want a fairly flat area. This is the most crucial part of planning for your horse barn design.
Air flow is very important when deciding on the location of your barn. A good horse barn should be well ventilated so positioning for optimum air flow is important. Fresh air assists in the comfort and freshness of the barn. You do not want a wind tunnel nor do you want too little air flow.
Utilities and traffic are also important features when deciding upon a location and the placement of your new horse barn. You do not want to pay an exuberant amount of money to gain access to the utilities. Therefore, placing the structure within a reasonable distance from the main utility lines is important. Horses and cars should never collide with one another so traffic flow needs to be well thought through in order to avoid conflict.
There are still some important questions that need answering but you are ready to start the lay out and design of your perfect horse barn. How many stalls do you want? How big do you want the stalls? A 12×12 stall is standard but making it a little larger would add some comfort and make cleanup easier. A nicer size stall would measure 12×14 or 14×14. Deciding what additional rooms you want or need such as an office, tack room, or even a utility/storage room will need to be decided upon so it can be figured into the design.
Smaller details such as windows, floors and doors are now ready to be decided upon. When picking the flooring out be sure to choose something that will be durable, easy to clean and gentle on the horses feet. You will also want to have lots of windows and maybe even a few sky lights. Windows should be placed higher than normal to avoid the horses from gnawing. You want to provide as much natural light as possible with out having the blazing sun shining directly on the horses. You will also need to choose the style of stall doors and barn doors that you want to use for your barn.
Electric and water is next on the agenda. Electrical outlets should be placed everywhere you anticipate needing to use one. Inside and outside each stall is a good location for outlets. Spigots should also be strategically placed everywhere you anticipate needing one. Placing spigots outside of each stall is smart because it allows for easy cleanup and you have water available without having to trek all over. The ultimate goals are to provide convenience, keep clutter to a minimum and reduce time spent commuting back and forth.
The horse barn design has been challenging but fulfilling but believe it or not you have just finished.
